Biography

Sarah Baumgartner is a Fine Artist and Designer, specializing in textiles and installation.

Born in Lugano, Switzerland, she moved to London to pursue her education in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths University, where she graduated with honors in 2025. During her degree and beyond, she has participated in numerous exhibitions and has been interviewed by Il Corriere del Ticino and featured in Suboart Magazine.
For her latest exhibition, held in February 2026 at the Swiss Embassy in London, she collaborated with Refusés, an international project based across London and New York.

Alongside her practice, she has launched a knitwear brand, Silly Hands, selling knit and crochet patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces on her website and social media platforms. She has also collaborated with a physical store in Shoreditch, curating a specific collection.

She now lives and works in London and Lugano, focusing on her artistic career.

Materials

Materiality is a central element in her practice. While she mostly utilises unspun wool,  hand-dyed with both synthetic and natural dyes, she explores the scope of textiles as a whole, utilising waste and natural materials. She has also worked with cotton fabric, tufting, machine knitting, knitting, embroidery, ceramics, and print-making. No matter the medium, the materials she works with play a crucial role in her practice and are constantly shaping the direction of her work.

Knitwear

Along with her fine art work, Sarah Baumgartner has developed her business, Silly Hands, in crochet and knitwear design. Her fine art practice and my design work intersect in many ways and are constantly informing one another.
Through Silly Hands, she create one-of-a-kind pieces, which are available on her website and have been sold in a physical store in Shoreditch, London.
She also creates and sells digital crochet and knitting patterns for other creators, enabling them to make their version of her designs.
